I'm so fed up with these big spending, reckless, self-absorbed maniacs. I don't know what else to say other than to post the letter that I just sent to them:
Members of Council:
What happened to the money that was saved through the formation of the Cape Fear Public Utility Authority? You conveniently were able to unload water and sewer responsibilities on them, and therefore should have saved money permanently in the budget. Instead, you, the county, and the CFPUA are raising rates/taxes. Are you really that clueless as to how to avoid this? You stop spending! And yes - you most certainly have a serious spending problem. I don't want to burst your bubble - but many of us are not stupid and do realize that the Parks Bond simply allowed you to incur more debt with interest in the name of parks. There is not and never was $35.5 million in a cookie jar for parks. This Inland Greens purchase was extremely audacious of you. You did it simply banking on the fact that most citizens are stupid and think that the Parks Bond money is set aside to cover this purchase.
You've got some serious nerve Mayor Saffo to condescendingly state that "we don't have a spending problem" and to say that any tax increase would be tied to the bond referendums. Talk about shirking your responsibilities. You are scratching your heads just trying to figure out how much more to bilk from us - and yet you KEEP SPENDING. That money doesn't exist. It's in the bond market; in the form of debt; that we have to pay; with interest. Myself and others have consistently challenged any of you to stand up as a leader and do something right for a change - to go against this damaging agenda that you seem so hell-bent on enacting. None of you will do it. Go along to get along. Same old story. Between you and I, we both know that there are absolutely plenty of cuts to make in this bloated budget - but that would be damaging to your sacred cows - the nonprofits and social agencies. The pet projects. The special interest. It's always the same - raise taxes, and/or cut police and fire. Don't you know how pathetic that is year after year?
Those of you that have been on city council for a few years know that any time you have ever managed to free up a dollar - you spend ten. Every single time. And now you want to come to us, the broke, unemployed taxpayer, and levy your burden on our backs. 11% unemployment - you've done nothing to address this. Why should you care? There's too many developers out there willing to make hefty campaign contributions in exchange for a destructive agenda to worry about us.
What happened, Mr. Mayor, to this empty talk that you "borrowed" from Paul Knight about small business tax incentives? Oh yeah - you were getting in front of cameras and reporters for a little while regurgitating what you heard him say on the campaign trail, but then it just sort of went away; and you reverted to form. MORE TAXES! MORE SPENDING! LESS PUBLIC SAFETY! Wow - what real leaders in a crisis you guys are. What a proud legacy you are staining City Hall with.
My taxes may be a little late this year, what with this silly economy thing absolutely crushing the life out of me. But please - continue to raise them more - it really does help.
