Transforming People into Patriots

So a ten year old from Pittsburgh emptied out his $8,500 college fund to purchase a Super Bowl ring that once belonged to William “The Refrigerator” Perry. Enriched with true naïveté, he then hopped on a plane, did the Super Bowl Shuffle on over to Chicago, and hand delivered it to the gap toothed human appliance himself. A seemingly nice gesture. Many people in the comment sections seem to think so.

But hold on a minute. The Fridge was a professional athlete who made millions of dollars through football and endorsement deals. Essentially playing a game and smiling for the camera. So what happened to all that money? Where did it go? Odds are, he was careless and wreck less with it. Remember, these were the days before the $.99 value menu.

Well, this reminds me of all of the hoopla you heard back when the big banks were being bailed out by Joe Taxpayer under the guise of “too big to fail”. The companies with the largest wells of money, the biggest salaries, and the best bonuses, somehow squandered it all and needed little ole you and me to bail them out. Not quite as cute, huh? I never got my autographed Bernanke jersey, did you?

Look, I understand the difference between this misguided little scamps voluntary giving to an aged football star, and the confiscatory demands of our tax dollars going to Wall Street. But how is “The Fridge” any more deserving of his bailout than the banks on Wall Street? At least some of the employees on Wall Street were just honest employees who were hoping not to get shafted on their bonuses that they had worked hard for and were promised. The Fridge? He probably just blew it all on Snickers and Three Musketeers. I know I would have.
