Transforming People into Patriots

It was a long, long night at the County Commissioner's Meeting, over a decade now, when Bill Caster was Chairman of the New Hanover County Commissioners and called for a vote a little after midnight on the purchase of Airlie Gardens. The price $12 million. If you remember, Airlie had suffered quite a bit of damage during hurricanes Bertha and Fran. For some reason, the County had offered top dollar for the property which was in dis-repair. And, for some other reason, the County had agreed to allowing the Corbett family to keep some prime real estate adjacent to the property being purchased by the County.

During the discussion that night, as it was already a 'done deal', Bill Caster noted that he was only voting for the purchase because of a "promise by the Commissioner's that Airlie would be self-sufficient"!

Now, almost 12 years later, and with taxpayers footing additional costs of almost an additional $12 million, Airlie is no more "self-sufficent" then it was when purchased!

Now, Airlie has been folded (or should I say buried) in the NHC Parks budget, with the Public "promise" of being "self-sufficient" lost forever. Now, all the talk is about how Airlie is such an "asset" to the community!

Thank you Bill Caster! You Conservative voters might want to remember this broken "promise" when you vote this Fall!

So much for politicians keeping those Public "promises"!

Who gives a sh__! I would love to have a Bentley...but, can I afford it? We either stand for Conservative principals or we just give them lip service - Like McCain! Buying Ailie was NOT the job of government....who give a sh__ about the Garden Party, the private parties for the select few, and the rest of the B.S.! Grow up...and act like an adult...not some kid with Dad's money.

Yes, Airlie Gardens is our costly baby now. But I'm sure many out there will rush to the occasion and tell you of the spectacular beauty of the gardens this time of year, and remind you the gardens will be the host of the Azalea Festival in two weeks. I have always wondered what the true market value of the property was when it was purchased by our city?
