A Non-Essential Life
So in light of the near government shutdown we almost endured, where at the strike of midnight the “non-essential” employees would have had their cubicles turn into proverbial pumpkins, we started hearing about all of the horror stories of what apocalyptic results would occur. Well color me doubtful…….. and tan. Seriously, it’s almost summer and if I were any whiter I could cause the record to scratch just by walking in to an Otis Day concert.
Along with such “tragedies” as Yellowstone National Park being shut down, and Barney Frank’s basement having to rely solely on charitable donations, we heard a lot about the potential furloughing of “non essential” workers. And that got me to thinking, what is a “non-essential” worker? Perhaps the quotations should have been put around the word “worker”.
To all of the business owners out there, how many “non essential” employees do you employ? To all of those who don’t own their own business, but wake up every morning and bust their butts all day at their job, would you consider your work to be “non essential”? Doesn’t the fact that the government itself refers to them as “non essential employees” scream to you an uncomfortable truth louder than Charlton Heston at the end of Soylent Green? Something doesn’t taste right here.
Look, life is limited, and we only have a finite amount of time on this earth. During that time, many if not most of us do what we can to enrich our own families whilst improving society as a whole. We often do this under the fulfillment of our job. Engineers, policeman, fireman, military men, all better their immediate families and society through the virtuous labor of their work. Heck, I’ll even include some teachers on that list.
You know, they say once you leave school, you never really use algebra again. I guess that’s partly right. But here is an algebraic equation that should shine the light of day on what “non essential” workers really bring to the collective table……..
Non essential employees = Non essential taxes
Non essential taxes = Non essential earnings/income
Non essential income = Non essential your finite time on this planet, ie, life
