Transforming People into Patriots

Riots are something that many of us in America automatically discount as a national event, but in light of our economy it may be something we should reconsider. Thankfully, most Americans view riots as being a disruptive and dysfunctional method of resolving problems; however, there are some in our society that feel this is the only way to accomplish their aim.  We look around the world today and we find riots occurring in many nations; the reasons given for many of these riots are numerous, but in the end it comes down to the economy and the availability of essential goods, and freedom.

If the reader has not learned anything from the current riots in Egypt, it is recommended that some research be done to ascertain why our Nation has viewed this public disruption with such apprehension. Our concerns are related to the perception that Egypt is a stabilizing force in the Middle-East, and the fact that it is in a position to control one of the outlets for oil shipments from this region. One might consider the corruption within the Egyptian government as being only slightly different in degree and type as the corruption occurring in our country. Another aspect that may be of concern is the erosion of the dollar’s buying power, as a result of the government’s policies related to the management of its fiscal responsibility and its energy policies.

There are still large segments of our population that don’t want to accept the fact that the government has promised more than it can provide, and these groups are unwilling to face this reality. This inability to accept the reality of our fiscal condition could very will lead to riots throughout our Nation; the longer it takes to come to this realization the more extreme the reaction will be.

Our energy policy has placed the country in a vulnerable position at a time that we are totally unprepared to cope with an additional calamity of this type; the impact on gas prices would create a shock to the economy that would send the country into a turmoil that would be difficult to overcome.  The destabilization that many nations are going through will have an impact on our country, whether it is due to a currency, material resource, or trade. The policies that the Nation has implemented have not taken into consideration the current condition we find ourselves in.

The events that are occurring in Egypt appear to be spurring other nations in the region to revolt against their governments; if this turns out to be the case, then the impact on our nation will have a multiplying effect.  Given the condition of governments around the world, it would be prudent to develop policies that would prepare us for the real dangers that have a high probability of occurring. One gets the impression that our leaders are incapable of thinking outside the box; they seem intent on carrying out their political agenda without any regard to the realities that are impacting the country as a result of conditions around the world.

One would have to be blind not to see the high probability of riots in the U.S. given the conditions around the world, and our inability to correct the shortcomings within our nation. The longer it takes us to address our problems, the greater the impact will be when our system starts to fall apart. Our problems will not be resolved without some pain to each and every one of us. We got into our current situation because our government and private sector were asleep at the switch for the past two generations.
