Transforming People into Patriots

Our political leaders are often more concerned with giving the electorate the impression that they are interested in our wellbeing, but their actions would suggest otherwise. One good example of this game can be illustrated by the use of the Consumer Price Index (CPI), which is used to indicate the rise in the cost of products. The government then turned to the electorate and suggested that our checks would be adjusted to reflect this increase; however, they developed a hybrid to the CPI, which they called the Core CPI and conveniently left out food and energy. The Government’s explanation for this extraction was that these two items had too many wide fluctuations to be considered in the Cost of Living Adjustment (COLA). In times of relative stability in the economy there may not be enough of a difference to notice a change in the consumers’ buying power, but during times of economic turmoil these two items become very important and exacerbate problems within the economy.
The economy of our country is experiencing a confluence of negative conditions that will only be enhanced by the position taken by our elected officials when they established COLA. If one were to think outside the box when evaluating our economic quandary it would be clear where the relationship is with many of the actions that are being taken by the government; one should not differentiate between federal, state, county, or municipal government agencies when evaluating the diverse forces impacting the nation’s fiscal condition. Political leaders at all levels of government would rather the electorate direct their attention to any level of government other than the one they are responsible for, but the actions at one level will have an impact on all the others.
The legislation that created the Core CPI does not just affect the individuals that receive this adjustment; it has an impact on all levels of government. When food and energy prices increase at a faster rate than the CPI it creates a contraction in our economy because more money is used to buy food and energy without a corresponding increase COLA. When one considers this administration’s energy policies it adds to the contraction as a result of higher prices at the gas pump. The Federal Reserve adds its contribution to the problem with the issuance of additional capital, which further devalues the dollar and increases the cost of products. The rapid growth of government agencies is another contributing factor, because this requires governments to increase taxes. The preceding factors have wider implications than what has been presented here, but they should be sufficient enough to give a glimpse of the impact they will have on the economy.
Government is not designed to operate efficiently when dealing with fiscal matters or for stimulating the private sector’s businesses. Over the past generations our elected officials have made it clear that the prime function of government is to support the political system, which allows the politician to grant favors for those segments that sustain their position. Government does not function like a business that has a defined product or objective that is supplied in an economical and efficient manner. The government has pressed the political system to a point that has awakened many voters to the failings of this system, which in reality goes counter to what the drafters of the Constitution had intended for the country. The electorate will need to pay more attention to the rhetoric presented by our elected officials if we are to avert the dissolution of our nation as defined by our Constitution. The semantics used by politicians is important, and voters will have to ensure they know what the politicians are really saying when they give their speeches; one may find this exercise very instructive and helpful in making a selection for an elected position. In reality one may find out more about the candidate by evaluating the semantics used by the prospective elected official. Start honing the skills that will allow you to read through the pretty pictures most of these politicians present to the electorate.
